Description:
Best known as the 'spice island', Zanzibar was the center for the slave-trade in East Africa and base for David Livingstone's expeditions into the unexplored African interior. Its long and fascinating history has resulted in an island rich in culture and the past still exists in the ancient narrow streets and curio shops of the Old Town . The air is heavy with the aroma of cloves and other spices which still provide a livelihood for many people of Zanzibar .
There are two main islands making up Zanzibar , Unguja and Pemba, but Unguja is popularly refered to as Zanzibar . The colours of these islands hold wonderful contrasts: mile-long untouched beaches with white sands, the deep green azure of the of the ocean, coconut palm trees against the blue sky with its ornamental white clouds. The islands are surrounded by unspoiled coral reefs, and are becoming famous for the spectacular scuba diving and snorkeling .
The old Stone Town of Zanzibar has been made into a world heritage site. It is a fascinating place with narrow winding streets, old Zanzibari wooden doors, small shops, busy bazaars, people and children playing. You may visit the Anglican Church of Christ, situated on the site of the old slave market, Beit-el-Ajaib (House of Wonders) which was built as a Sultans Palace , and is now a museum, the lively and bustling Dhow Harbour , the colourful and aromatic Central market and other fascinating parts of the rich history and everyday life of the people.
Climate and Weather
Zanzibar offers a comfortable equatorial climate all year round. The climate varies from warm to hot, though there is always a pleasant fine breeze from the Indian Ocean . The heavy rainfall is from March to end May and further short rains fall in November. The relatively cool, dry period from June to October is particularly pleasant, with average temperatures of 25 degrees centigrade with cool long breezes of the southeast monsoon prevailing.

There are 7 Seafront Rooms which are set back a little from the beach for privacy. Next there are 3 Garden Rooms in a second group a little further back and another 7 Garden Rooms a further 100 metres back from the beach which offer a glimpse of the sea and a cool breeze through the night. All rooms are furnished Zanzibari style and are clean and comfortable . All rooms have fans. Electricity is 230AC, powered by generator, which is usually run for most of the day and through the night. Plugs are UK 3-rectangular-pin pattern. The main dining area with its stunning outlook is intimate and totally laid back. The food is good without being ambitious with lots of fresh seafood on offer.
There is a full 5 star PADI dive school at the lodge, which works in conjunction with the dive office in Stonetown, and offers the full range of PADI certificate courses, as well as try dives and snorkelling trips for non-divers.
The atmosphere at Matemwe is relaxed and laid-back but this does not mean that you wait half an hour for a beer - the staff are friendly and attentive. Please note that, as Matemwe is on such an undeveloped part of the coast we do recommend that you book for Half Board as there are not that many options for Dining out!

In the heart of the old Stone town of Zanzibar is a beautifully restored palace that once was the home of the richest men in the Swahili Empire. There are 15 rooms in 236 Hurumzi, accessed via a steep stairwell (no lifts here in Zanzibar ). Each one differs in size, layout and special features. The top rooms offer the best views, but have ceiling fans only. All the downstairs rooms have air conditioning.
Special touches include fresh flowers, jasmine flowers on your pillow at bedtime and bottled water. All rooms are en-suite, but don't expect the luxuries of television, telephone or mini-bar. Some rooms don't even have wardrobes. The Arabic stone baths are part of the charm of the place.
You'll notice a mixture of Persian, Indian and Arab elements. The very spacious rooms are typical of Arab building, while the woodwork and windows shows Persian and Indian influences. The lattice windows and stained glass was most probably made in India and shipped over. The enormous teak wood beams were imported from Burma .
The Tower Top Restaurant lies high among the minarets, temple towers, and church spires. It is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary eating venues in the world. Located on the roof of the building, it makes guests feel as if they're on top of the world as they sip exotic drinks and watch the sun disappear into the Indian Ocean . The Muslim call to prayer accents the eastern setting of Arab-style pillows and small tables and the Hindu Temple chimes remind visitors that they are far away from the stress they left at home.
