Munira Island Camp is a fantastic retreat on the Indian Ocean Island of Kiwayu. It is probably the loveliest island in the Lamu Archipelago. The eco-friendly camp runs on solar and wind power and was started in 1991 by Mike and Caroline Kennedy. It is a simple place which blends into, and works with, its natural environment. Rustic rooms have bathrooms with bucket showers and long-drop toilets with a view!
With an unspoilt six mile section of beach, an extensive area of mangrove creek, and lots of caves and coves, it is a fun place from which to explore, or alternatively to kick back and relax.
Dolphins and whales are seen regularly off the coast, moving in shoals across the ocean. There is spectacular snorkelling straight off the beach, and scuba, water skiing and windsurfing are also available. Fishing is possible in the mangrove creeks or offshore in deep sea fishing boats for the more serious fisherman. Two 33ft motorised sailing dhows and a 29ft sessie canoe are available for hire for explorative trips around the Lamu Archipelago. Overnight or day trips can be arranged to visit the historical Lamu Town, 40 miles south of Kiwayu Island.
